The golfer behind the blog *UPDATE*
Hello everyone and welcome to this week’s blog. As I said in my “THE BEST PUBLIC COURSES AROUND SYDNEY FOR GOLFERS OF ALL LEVELS” blog, I wanted to share a life update since starting the blog again and reintroduce myself to you all. Let’s get it!
My name is June Song, and I am a 23-year-old elite amateur golfer from Sydney. I first started playing golf at age 6 after following my dad to his golf lesson. I quickly fell in love with the sport and have played ever since. Since starting my golf journey, I have been fortunate in experiencing both the ups and downs of playing at the highest levels.
I have had the privilege of representing the state and country at multiple events across Australia and the world. My highlight so far is playing in the Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America tournament in 2023. It was my first time playing an LPGA tournaments, and truly a memorable experience.

The game has allowed me to attend university in the United States on a golf scholarship, which was a goal of mine. I am currently in my final semester at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. I will graduate in December with my B.A. in Journalism, with a minor in Art History. I needed an internship to fulfill a degree requirement, so I decided to return home to Sydney and work for Golf NSW. Along with the internship, I am currently taking four classes to complete my degree. All the work is testing my time management skills!
I have been asked many times why I decided to study instead of turning pro right after high school. I am an extreme planner by nature, and I love having different options to choose from. I knew that a degree would give me the freedom to put my all into a professional golf career, while also providing a foundation for a future career off the course if necessary.
Pursuing a university degree has also opened my eyes to other interests. I have always been fascinated by both journalism and the media, and I have been able to gain useful insights and skills into the profession – I am using some of them to write this post. From learning how to use a broadcast camera, take professional photos and write about different topics, I have been able to experience the many sides of journalism.
When I was a child, one of my fondest memories was going to the art museum with my mum. I remember being captivated by the Picasso exhibition at the NSW Art Gallery when I was 9, which eld me to a lifelong love of art. Although the extent of my own art skills is limited to drawing stick figures, my minor in Art History has fulfilled my aesthetic and intellectual love of art. I am hoping to one day pursue a postgraduate degree in the subject.
Being on the golf team at SMU, and previously at Iowa State university, has taught me so much about myself. The past few years have truly been a roller coaster ride of valuable experiences. As I prepare to go pro, I wanted to finish my last semester back home. SMU worked with me to arrange remote classwork and an internship here. For me this means that I can work on my golf while also completing my degree.
Now with my graduation only a few months away, what’s next?
Well, I am excited to say that I am hoping to play in both the Ladies European Qualifying Tour school and the WPGA Tour qualifying tournament at the end of this year. By playing these two events, I hope to turn professional at the end of the year. Although I still have a lot to juggle before then, I know that with consistent effort I will be able to achieve my goals.
